Updating Your Avada WordPress Theme

Avada is one of the more popular Themes for WordPress. Indeed, it’s easy to see why so many business websites run on this feature-rich theme. It comes with so many useful features, you will wonder how you managed without it!

Like most technology this complex, it requires updates and maintenance. This means that every now and then you will need to update the theme itself, usually to take advantage of new fixes, additional features and new functionality. As with all website updates, this can be risky to your website, so we hope this guide helps you minimise the risk and disruption to your website and ensure the best practice upgrading your Avada WordPress theme.

Why Upgrade Avada?

As with most software, there are quite a few reasons: usually upgrades fix snags, sometimes they patch security vulnerabilities and other times they just offer some better, more enhanced features. We recommend keeping all software your business uses up to date wherever possible, including your WordPress Avada Theme! Without further ado, let’s look at the Avada upgrade steps in this process:

Step 1 – Check You Meet The Requirements

To be able to run the current version of Avada (at the time of writing) you will need to be sure your server has the following:

  • WordPress 4.6 or later

  • PHP 5.6 or later (please note: WordPress itself recommends using PHP 7)

  • MySQL 5.6 or later

Step 2 – Optional, Database Cleanup

While not necessary, this would be a great opportunity to clear out any clutter from the site by cleaning out comment spam. Many plugins will add database tables, but not remove them when you uninstall the plugin so (as we discuss in this post) this is also a good chance to clean up the WordPress database and ensure the best performance.

Step 3 – Backup Everything

While Avada manages updates very well, most being fairly smooth – as with all updates of this nature, you should always backup your website and database before doing anything! This applies to most websites where there is a possibility of them being taken offline should anything go wrong. Ideally you want to be back up and running as soon as possible with minimum downtime.

Step 4 – Upgrade

There are two ways you can do this, automatically and manually. Generally, we recommend doing the Automatic updates which should be fairly safe (provided you have backed everything up). We will detail both processes here:

  • Step 1 – Register your purchase by Token Registration
  • Step 2 – Go to do the WordPress Dashboard > Updates section of your installation.
  • Step 3 – Under the ‘Themes’ section, you will see the Avada update notification message. If you don’t see the update and are aware there is one available, click the ‘Check Again’ button on top of the page to refresh the updates list.
  • Step 4 – Check the checkbox beside the Avada update, then click the ‘Update Themes’ button to start the update.
  • Step 5 – The update should go ahead, wait for it to complete. You will see a success notification once this has been updated successfully.
  • Step 6 – Don’t forget, you will also need to update the required plugins for Avada. At the time of writing, both Fusion Core and Fusion Builder are required for the Avada theme.

Manual Upgrade

The alternative is to manually install the Avada update, by following the steps below:

  • Step 1Login to your ThemeForest account, navigate to your ‘Downloads’ tab and locate your Avada theme purchase.

  • Step 2Click the ‘Download’ button and select either to download the ‘Installable WordPress file only’, which is just the Avada.zip file or choose to download ‘All Files & Documentation’ which is the full Avada theme package.

  • Step 3Once the files have downloaded, you will need ot decide if you want to upload the theme files via FTP or WordPress.

Please note:

Wordpress pluginsIf you are manually uploading the new Theme by FTP to upgrade your Avada theme, you will need to delete the old Avada theme folder. The reason for this is that occasionally, some versions may have files removed and they will also need removing from your server. So it is best to remove (or rename) your Avada folder, and upload the new one in its entirety.

If in doubt, we recommend checking the Avada website for further information and answering any additional questions you may have. We thoroughly enjoy using this theme and encourage you to as well!
